In Chisamba District, 46-year-old Donovan Mutinta, a dedicated farmer and member of the Mutaba Dairy Cooperative, is rewriting his dairy farming story through innovation. Donovan is the only farmer in his cooperative who has so far benefited from Artificial Insemination (AI) services under the Jersey Breed Focused Dairy Development Project in Zambia (JBFDDZ) and the results are already transforming his herd.
“I am very pleased with the project,” Donovan said with a smile. “I conducted Artificial Insemination on four cows and the results are now visible. I have been fortunate to have a female calf. My wife and I have decided to continue using pedigree semen from the project, and we have finally removed the bull from our herd. This project is truly helping us enhance our dairy breeds.”
For Donovan, the benefits go beyond numbers. With excellent outcomes from just one attempt at insemination on four animals, AI is proving to be a reliable and cost-effective method to improve productivity. More importantly, it represents a sustainable pathway to securing the future of dairy farming.
“Dairy farming requires patience and commitment,” Donovan reflected. “With the right breeds, the right tools, and the right knowledge, we can raise a new generation of farmers who are enthusiastic and equipped to succeed.”
Thanks to the our supporting partners Jersey Overseas Aid and Royal Jersey Agriculture and Horticulture Society, Donovan and farmers like him are not only improving their herds but also planting the seeds of a more resilient dairy sector in Zambia.
