Overcoming Challenges, Inspiring Change

Robert Mbao, a 28-year-old with a disability, is a shining example of determination and perseverance. As the only son in a family of five, with four sisters, Robert has faced his share of challenges, but he refuses to let his disability define his future.

His journey took a transformative turn when the Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DIDRR) Project was introduced in Mambwe District, a region prone to climate-related disasters. When Robert learned that he had been selected as a beneficiary, he felt an overwhelming sense of hope.

🗣️ “When I heard that I was chosen, I was so happy. I knew this would change my life,” Robert recalls. “I had always wanted to be independent, and this was my chance.”

Through the project, Robert gained critical knowledge about disaster preparedness, empowering him to take proactive measures to protect himself and his family. But the support didn’t stop there. With 🌱 seeds provided by the DIDRR project, Robert was able to expand his small farm. Today, his flourishing garden 🥬🍅 not only ensures food security for his family but also generates a steady income 💰.

🗣️ “Before, I struggled to make enough money, but now I can sell my vegetables and provide for my family,” Robert shares proudly. “Twice a week, I travel to sell my produce, and with that income, I can buy what we need.”

Robert’s success is not just personal—it is an inspiration to others, particularly young people facing similar challenges. He stands as a testament to the fact that disability is not a limitation but rather a call to rise above adversity. His story embodies the power of resilience, inclusion, and opportunity 💪🏾, making him a role model in his community.

🗣️ “I want people to know that disability does not mean inability. We can achieve great things if we are given the right support,” he emphasizes.

🌍 About the DIDRR Project 🌍

The Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DIDRR) Project is designed to reduce the heightened risks that persons with disabilities face during climate-related disasters 🌊⛈️🔥. By strengthening inclusive disaster preparedness and climate adaptation strategies, the project ensures that vulnerable individuals are not left behind.

Implemented in Zambia with support from German Development Cooperation (BMZ) and Christian Blind Mission (CBM)🤝, the initiative directly benefits 825 individuals, both with and without disabilities in Gwembe and Mambwe Districts, by equipping them with knowledge, resources, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Through initiatives like Robert’s, DIDRR is proving that when communities embrace inclusion, they build resilience that benefits everyone. 💙♿✨
